What are the basic virtues that a responsible
company should have? In my view, if a company wants to contribute
to human beings and society, it should cherish the three virtues
detailed below.
First, every culture is inherently
based on a philosophy. For instance, laws are built on the
firm foundation of legal philosophy, and such philosophy gives
a human face to laws and regulations. Likewise, an enterprise
should have a fundamental philosophy. It becomes more than
a truth in the 21st century that an enterprise without a philosophy
can not survive. It is not wrong to say that companies can
make social contributions just by creating profits and jobs.As
Adam Smith pointed out in his book National Wealth, selfishness
and greed are the primary sources triggering the creation
and survival of a private enterprise. |
|
Nevertheless, if such selfishness and greed grow out of control,
then survival of the fittest and the rules of jungle would be pervasive
pushing the weak against the wall. In this regard, all employees
of Kim Jeong Moon Aloe at home and abroad should be protected so
they may enjoy a high quality of life. In other words, I wish all
of our employees to regard our company as a place where they can
realize their dreams. Employees should never be treated as expandable
assets.
Second, enterprises should put their
priority on social responsibility. Human beings do not exist for
work. They should regard their contributions to society as their
biggest mission in their life. In this century, wealth is increasingly
being held by a small number of people, and the gap between the
rich and the poor is becoming larger than ever before. According
to a World Bank report, the disparity of wealth distribution has
doubled over the past 40 years. The average household income of
the top 20 countries is 37 times as high as that of the least developed
countries. Plato clearly said in his book Nations, Justice is the
most basic building block to a nations existence. If justice is
not properly served, societies and nations are bound to collapse.
Social justice is closely related to wealth distribution and sharing.
The equal distribution of wealth would bring peace to mankind. Around
the world as many as 1.2 billion people are living in absolute poverty
on less than 1 dollar a day(equivalent to 1,200 KRW). Against this
background, our company should stand in the forefront of ensuring
a just and fair society.
Third, human beings should
resort to the natural healing power supported by our bodys immune
system. It is all about natural medicine. By any measures, environmental
degradation should be prevented. In August 26, 2002, 60,000 representatives
and heads of 189 states gathered in Johannesburg, Republic of South
Africa to convene a global submit on sustainable development. The
excessive pursuit of profits and corporate greed has dealt a severe
blow to mother nature. For instance, excessive fishing has cut fishing
stocks by one third and some 5% of our worlds tropical forests disappear
every a year. KJM Aloe should not follow the same path of other
companies. Our corporate goal should be to pursue a human society
where nature and human beings can grow and develop in harmony together.
A good company works for humanity without harming the earth.
Kim Jeong Moon Aloe(KJM Aloe) will never forget these virtues and
do its best to keep these values. |
